Stella eyed my wrist. “I can’t believe he fixed it that easily.”

“He’s good at his job,” I said.

Waylon stood behind the counter at the Enchanted. “What can I get you lovely ladies?”

I smiled. “You’ve been working a lot lately. I sure hope Bessie’s paying you well.”

“Not even a penny, but she takes good care of me, and that’s all that matters.”

“Waylon, I can’t believe the transformation you’ve made,” Stella said.

My jaw almost hit the floor. Everyone knew Waylon had been a cantankerous old coot—Bessie’s description before they fell in love—but nobody talked about it.

“That’s what true love does,” he said.

“I’ll have an iced pumpkin spice latte, please,” I said, trying to change the subject.

“Was it a love potion or spell, and may I borrow it?”

I angled my head in front of her. “Stella!”

“What? If Bessie used it on him, why can’t I use it on someone?”

“Oh, for the love of Goddess,” I said. “Bessie didn’t cast a spell over Waylon.”

“Are you sure? She’s always putting drops of stuff in people’s drinks.”

The corner of Waylon’s mouth twitched.

I scrubbed my hand down the side of my face. “Waylon, I’m sorry for—”

“Don’t be sorry,” he said. He smiled at Stella. “She used nothing on me. Love potions don’t last long, anyway. It was all me, and all natural. One day I came into the store, and out of the blue, I saw Bessie in a different light. She stood right over there.” He pointed to the display window in front of the leather chairs where he normally sat. “She was decorating the display window like she has every month for years. The sun was just rising, and it cast a warm glow through the window, and out of nowhere, this yellow aura encircled her. When she turned and smiled at me, even though I’d been a pain in the butt forever, I couldn’t help myself. I fell in love. I went home and decided to be a better magical because that’s what she deserved.” He winked. “I also knew she wouldn’t give a cantankerous old coot the time of day.”

“That’s a lovely story,” I said. “How come you never told me?”

“You never asked.”

Stella bumped my arm with her shoulder. “See, it’s not rude to ask questions.”

“Depends on the question,” I said.

“Thanks for telling us, Waylon,” she said. “And I’ll have what she’s having.”

“Sure thing, sweetheart.”

We sat at my regular table, the one I’d chosen years ago because it had a perfect view of the entire store, other than behind the book stacks. The place was empty except for the three of us, Cooper, and Pony. I flicked my previously injured, but repaired by Dr. Hetty, wrist and set a saucer of finely chopped whitefish on the table for Cooper.

“Thank you,” he said. “I’m starving.”

Pony sat beside my chair. “Woof!” He stomped his right foot.

“Are you hungry, sweet boy?” I tapped his nose. “Doesn’t Stella ever feed you?”

“Oh, my Goddess. He’s an eating machine. I’ve spent three times as much at the grocery store since getting him.
